Just west of the Continental Divide, the small town of Sparwood (population 4,200) is the most easterly town in British Columbia. Those who travel Highway 3 know the town as the home of the Terex Titan – the world's largest tandem axle dump truck. One of the highest-elevation towns in Canada, Sparwood is all about the open pit coal mining that takes place on a gargantuan scale in the mountains on the east side of the Elk Valley.
The mining history of the area is represented in the murals that adorn the slab concrete sides of buildings, and in the antique mining equipment that is placed in key locations around the downtown core.
For more information on Sparwood, including latest events, details of parks and trails etc., please visit the official Sparwood website.
Ten minutes to the Alberta border and 20 minutes to Fernie. A rural setting near hiking, biking, fishing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, dirt biking, zip line and aerial park, skiing and the great outdoors.
Snowmobiling is also available nearby in Elkford and Corbin.
Amazing Retreat. I was delighted to find this hidden country gem to rejunivate and gather creative thought for the book I am writing. Whether single or a couple I would recommend a stay at Holley Lane. Huge open windows look out to open countryside. The charming decor instantly gives one a feeling of warmth and rest and sets the tone for wonderful stay. Wanda Bjorgan Montana
